Self-sabotage is a protection mechanism that outlived its usefulness. Discipline won't break it. Four questions to find the childhood rule still running you.
Wow, Mike, what a fantastic and well written post. Also quite the thought provoking one that I really needed to read right now. The four questions to uproot this saboteur are just what I needed right now as I am in a really rough spot that going to require some courage to navigate thru to get a peaceful resolution to this situation. Thank you so much for sharing your heartfelt life story.
I am so glad to hear that it caught you at the right time. Thank you for sharing what you're going through. Just know you're not alone. I tend to write this stuff in real-time (or as close to it as possible) because these are the things I'm wrestling with; if I find something that helps me, I hope it'll help someone else.
My thinking is always, "If this helps one person, it was worth writing." Appreciate you letting me know it resonated with you.
Mike, it is surreal the timing of this post. It literally was the key to get me moving along and making a better life for myself. To share just a bit, my childhood saboteur is me at 5 years old seeing my mother sobbing in the kitchen because she had just found out that her father had died from a heart attack. She was very close to her father. When he visited us, he always brought Hawaiian punch which as kids we always called "Grandpa juice.' This memory has impacted my life for 65+ years. This little girl is also slowly going to get and receive the healing that she needs. I am making some life changes which I have already started today. This post gave me the insight and courage to go forward. Thank you so much, Mike. If there is something that I can do to help you out, let me know.
Thank you for being so vulnerable and sharing your story. That's such an impactful moment at such a malleable age, it's no wonder it's stayed with you for so long. If you've already started your healing journey and making changes, you're on the right path. Keep going!
Yes, my journey has been gaining momentum of recent months. Yesterday started it off for real. I was telling a long time friend about the post and me at 5 years old. Had tears and cracks in my voice telling her. But it's a relief to be able to heal that child (me). I know that you feel the same about 11 year old you. Cheering you on your journey also!
